Message by the Former Chairperson
As the North West Gambling Board, we are hopeful that despite the effects felt by the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the previous years, the gambling industry will be able to recover from the resultant economic crisis. In order to survive the inevitable, the entity needs to be proactive and devises new strategies and systems that will not continue to rely on the traditional ways of gambling.
The Board continues to ensure that all relevant policies are developed in order to promote the smooth functioning of the entity. The policies are not static, therefore we continue to review and align them to economic trends and applicable legislations. The Board will continue to introduce additional forms of gambling modes with an aim to diversify and expand gambling activities and provide the inhabitants of the North West province with additional alternative forms of leisure, entertainment and business opportunities. The Board remains faithful to its objective to open the industry and create more opportunities for participation of Local Previously Disadvantaged Individuals (LPDI’s) and Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises in the gambling industry.
Illegal gambling however continues to be a challenge and various strategies are being developed by the Board in partnership with the South African Police Service to ensure that illegal gambling in all its manifestations is supressed and eradicated. In this regard inspectors of the Board were provided with law enforcement training in order to effectively carry out this mandate and so far have managed to remove over one thousand five hundred (1 500) illegal gambling machines from the environment. Nonetheless, the operators re-invent themselves through computer-based gambling which requires more sophisticated methods of combatting and getting the perpetrators prosecuted.
Plans are afoot to finalise the amendment of the Gambling Legislation as well as to conduct a feasibility study for the awarding of the 5th casino license to the NW Province. The the 5th casino license will change the economic standing of the industry in terms of revenue collection and job creation.
The Board would like to extend its gratitude to the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism Honourable MEC Keneetswe Mosenogi for her leadership and encouragement, the Portfolio Committee on Economic Development, Environment, Tourism, Agriculture & Rural Development and the Provincial Executive Council for their oversight and valuable inputs to the Board’s affairs. A special appreciation to all stakeholders, NWGB Management team and staff for their diligence and dedicated service.
